Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will understand the scientific method and be able to conduct simple experiments at home.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: Water, vinegar, baking soda, food coloring, balloons, plastic bottles, paper towels, and a notebook. Make sure to have a clean workspace and adult supervision for certain activities.

Activities

  • 1. Balloon Blow-Up: Fill a bottle with vinegar, add baking soda to a balloon, stretch the balloon over the bottle opening, and watch it inflate!

  • 2. Colorful Eruptions: Mix baking soda, water, and food coloring in a bottle, then add vinegar and watch the colorful eruption.

  • 3. Absorbency Test: Place different paper towel brands in water and see which one absorbs the most liquid.

Talking Points

  • "Science is like solving a puzzle. We ask questions, make guesses, and test our ideas to see what happens."
  • "The scientific method helps us organize our thoughts when we do experiments. It's like following a recipe for a science project."
  • "When we mix baking soda and vinegar, a chemical reaction happens that produces gas. This gas inflates the balloon or causes an eruption."
  • "Observing and recording our results is important in science. It helps us remember what we did and what we learned."
