Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will understand the basics of the scientific method and be able to conduct simple experiments at home.
Materials and Prep
Materials needed: water, oil, food coloring, vinegar, baking soda, balloons, paper towels, and a notebook. Make sure to have a clear workspace and adult supervision if needed.
Activities
Make a lava lamp: Fill a clear container with water, add oil, and a few drops of food coloring. Observe what happens and write down your observations.
Volcano eruption: Mix vinegar and baking soda in a container, then quickly cover the container with a balloon. Watch the balloon inflate as the gas is produced.
Color-changing milk: Pour milk into a plate, add drops of different food coloring, then dip a cotton swab with dish soap and touch the milk. Observe the colors mixing and moving.
Talking Points
"Science is all about exploring and discovering how things work around us."
"The scientific method helps us ask questions, make observations, form hypotheses, conduct experiments, and draw conclusions."
"Observations are key in science. Write down what you see, hear, smell, and touch during your experiments."
"Experiments can be fun and messy, but they teach us a lot about the world we live in."
