Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will learn about the scientific method and conduct fun experiments to understand how it works.

Materials and Prep

Materials:

  • Water
  • Cups
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Food coloring
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda

You will also need a notebook to record your observations and results.

Activities

1. Make a hypothesis: Think of a question you want to answer through an experiment, like "Does salt make water boil faster?"

2. Conduct experiments: Try adding salt to one cup of water and leaving another cup plain. See which one boils first.

3. Create a volcano: Mix vinegar and baking soda in a cup to see a fun eruption. Try adding food coloring for extra excitement!

Talking Points

  • What is a hypothesis?

"A hypothesis is like a prediction or educated guess about what will happen in an experiment. It helps us focus our investigation."

  • Why do we record observations?

"Recording observations helps us keep track of what we see happening during an experiment. It's like being a science detective!"

  • What is the scientific method?

"The scientific method is a step-by-step process scientists use to investigate questions and solve problems. It helps us be systematic in our approach."
