Objective

By the end of this lesson, Shawn will be able to understand how human influence affects the characteristics of a place and how spaces are managed for environmental sustainability.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Coloring materials
  • Access to outdoor space (backyard, park, etc.)
  • Computer/tablet for research

No prior knowledge needed, just a curious mind!

Activities

  • Observation Walk: Take a walk in your backyard or a nearby park. Observe how human activities have influenced the environment. Make notes or sketches of what you see.
  • Research Project: Use the computer or tablet to research a famous landmark and how human influence has shaped its characteristics. Create a poster or presentation to share your findings.
  • Design Your Sustainable Space: Imagine you are in charge of designing a new park. Draw a plan that includes features that promote environmental sustainability, such as recycling bins or a community garden.

Talking Points

  • "Humans can change the environment by building cities, roads, and factories. These changes can affect the animals and plants that live in those places."
  • "It's important to think about how we use spaces like parks or forests. We can plant trees, recycle, and keep the area clean to help protect the environment."
  • "When we visit a place, we can observe how people have influenced it. Look for signs of human activity like buildings, roads, or pollution."
