Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply math concepts through fun Irish dance activities.
Materials and Prep
- Pen and paper
- Space to move around
- No prior knowledge needed
Activities
- Rhythm Counting: Create a rhythm using your feet while dancing. Count the beats and write them down. For example, a jig may have 6 beats per bar.
- Shape Patterns: Use your arms and legs to create shapes while dancing. Identify the geometric shapes you are forming and count the sides of each shape.
- Counting Steps: Practice a dance routine and count the number of steps you take for each move. Calculate the total number of steps in the routine.
Talking Points
- Rhythm Counting: "Let's count the beats as we dance. Each step has a number, like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Can you feel the rhythm?"
- Shape Patterns: "Look at the shapes you are making with your arms and legs. How many sides does a triangle have? Can you make a square with your body?"
- Counting Steps: "Count the steps as you dance. How many steps did you take for that move? Let's add them up to find the total."
