Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic math concepts while having fun baking!

Materials and Prep

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking ingredients (flour, sugar, eggs, etc.)
  • Oven (to be used by an adult)
  • Apron (optional but fun!)
  • Make sure to wash your hands before starting

Activities

  • Counting Ingredients: Count the number of eggs, cups of flour, and spoons of sugar needed for the recipe.
  • Measuring Fun: Use the measuring cups and spoons to measure out the ingredients. Practice saying the numbers out loud!
  • Shape Sorting: Cut out cookie dough into different shapes (circles, triangles, squares) and count how many of each you make.
  • Pattern Making: Create a pattern with chocolate chips on top of your cookies. For example, chocolate chip, no chocolate chip, chocolate chip, no chocolate chip...

Talking Points

  • Counting: "Let's count how many eggs we need for our cake. One, two, three eggs!"
  • Measuring: "We need 2 cups of flour. Can you help me find the measuring cup with the number 2 on it?"
  • Shapes: "Look, our cookies are all different shapes! How many circles did we make?"
  • Patterns: "Let's make a yummy chocolate chip pattern on our cookies. Chip, no chip, chip, no chip..."
