Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to demonstrate basic reading skills, such as recognizing letters and their sounds, identifying simple words, and understanding basic concepts of a story.
Materials and Prep
- Alphabet flashcards
- Picture books
- Whiteboard or paper
- Markers or crayons
Make sure to familiarize yourself with the alphabet flashcards and choose appropriate picture books for the lesson.
Activities
- Introduction to Letters: Show the student the alphabet flashcards one by one and ask them to identify the letter and say its sound. Encourage them to repeat after you.
- Word Recognition: Choose a few simple words from the flashcards and write them on the whiteboard or paper. Ask the student to read the words aloud and match them to the corresponding flashcards.
- Story Time: Select a picture book and read it aloud to the student. Pause occasionally to ask questions about the story, characters, or events. Encourage the student to make predictions and connections to their own experiences.
- Story Retelling: After reading the story, ask the student to retell the main events or summarize the story in their own words. This will help develop their comprehension skills.
- Letter Sound Hunt: Choose a letter from the flashcards and ask the student to find objects around the house that start with that letter sound. Let them share their findings and discuss them together.
