Materials and Prep

  • Watercolor paints
  • Paintbrushes
  • Water container
  • Watercolor paper or thick drawing paper
  • Palette or plastic plate
  • Apron or old clothes to protect from paint stains

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Painting (5 minutes)
Show the student different paintings and discuss what they see. Ask questions like "What colors do you notice?" and "What do you think the artist was trying to express?" This will help them start thinking critically about art.
  2. Exploring Colors (10 minutes)
Provide the student with watercolor paints and a palette. Let them experiment with mixing different colors and observe how they change. Encourage them to create their own color chart by painting different color combinations.
  3. Brush Stroke Techniques (10 minutes)
Demonstrate various brush stroke techniques, such as straight lines, curved lines, dots, and zigzags. Have the student practice each technique on a separate sheet of paper.
  4. Creating an Artwork (15 minutes)
Encourage the student to use their imagination and create a painting using the colors and brush stroke techniques they have learned. Remind them to think about what they want to express through their artwork.
  5. Sharing and Reflecting (5 minutes)
Allow the student to share their artwork with you. Ask them questions like "What do you like about your painting?" and "What was challenging or fun about this activity?" This will help them reflect on their experience and build confidence in their artistic abilities.
