Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to read and comprehend a recipe, identify key baking-related vocabulary words, and demonstrate understanding by completing a baking activity.

Materials and Prep

  • Recipe book or printed recipe
  • Pen or pencil
  • Ingredients and tools for baking (based on the chosen recipe)

Before starting the lesson, make sure the student has a basic understanding of reading and following instructions.

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of reading a recipe by showing the student a recipe book or a printed recipe. Discuss the different sections of a recipe, such as the ingredients list, measurements, and step-by-step instructions.
  2. Choose a simple baking recipe together, like chocolate chip cookies or banana bread. Read the recipe aloud, emphasizing the importance of following each step carefully.
  3. Have the student practice reading the recipe independently. Encourage them to highlight or underline any unfamiliar words or baking terms they come across.
  4. Discuss the highlighted words and baking terms. Help the student understand their meanings and how they relate to the recipe. Write down the definitions and create a personalized baking vocabulary list.
  5. Proceed with the baking activity, following the recipe step-by-step. Assist the student as needed, but encourage them to take the lead in measuring, mixing, and following instructions.
  6. Once the baking is done, have a taste test and discuss the final product. Ask the student to reflect on their experience and what they learned about reading recipes and baking.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Reading a recipe is like reading a set of instructions for baking."
