Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore math concepts while having fun outdoors.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: pen/pencil, paper, measuring tape, outdoor space

Make sure to find a safe and suitable outdoor area for the activities.

Activities

  • Counting Nature: Take a walk outside and count how many different types of birds, flowers, or insects you can find. Write down your findings.
  • Outdoor Measurements: Use the measuring tape to measure the length of a tree trunk, the width of a flower bed, and the height of a fence. Record your measurements and compare them.
  • Nature Patterns: Look for patterns in nature, such as the arrangement of petals on a flower or the stripes on a butterfly's wings. Draw the patterns you find and try to create your own nature pattern.

Talking Points

  • Counting Nature: "Let's count how many red flowers we see. Can you help me count them?"
  • Outdoor Measurements: "Let's measure how tall this tree is. Can you hold the tape measure for me?"
  • Nature Patterns: "Do you see how the leaves on this plant are arranged? They make a pattern, just like the stripes on a zebra!"
