By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and differentiate long vowel sounds in words.
Materials and Prep
- Whiteboard or paper
- Markers or pencils
- Knowledge of the alphabet
Activities
Draw a big letter "A" on the whiteboard or paper. Practice saying "Aaaa" like Wednesday Addams. Can you think of words that have the "Aaaa" sound in them?
Write down the word "Eeeek" and emphasize the long "Eeee" sound. Let's pretend we are scared like Wednesday Addams. Can you find other words with the "Eeee" sound?
Sing a song with the long vowel sounds. For example, "A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y!" Let's sing it together!

"When we hear a long vowel sound, it sounds like the letter's name. Like the letter 'A' says 'Aaaa'."
"Let's practice saying 'Aaaa' like Wednesday Addams. Can you make that spooky sound with me?"
"Now, let's find words that have the 'Aaaa' sound, like 'cake' or 'lake'. Can you think of more words with that sound?"
"Great job! Now let's try the long 'Eeee' sound together. It sounds like the letter 'E' says its name."
"Imagine we are scared like Wednesday Addams and say 'Eeeek' with the long 'Eeee' sound. Can you find other words with that sound?"
"Let's sing a fun song with the long vowel sounds. Repeat after me: 'A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y!'"
