Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to change letters in words to make new ones and have fun creating new words!
Materials and Prep
Materials Needed:
- Paper
- Colorful markers or crayons
- Imagination!
Prep: None
Activities
1. Let's start by writing the word "WEDNESDAY" on a piece of paper. Look at each letter and think of a new word that can be made by changing one letter at a time. For example, you can change "W" to "B" to make a new word "BEDNESDAY".
2. Draw a picture of Wednesday Addams and write new words around her that you create by changing letters in "WEDNESDAY".
3. Play a game where you say a word and challenge your student to change one letter to make a new word. For example, if you say "CAT", they can change it to "HAT".
Talking Points
- Words are made up of letters. When we change a letter in a word, we can create a whole new word!
- It's like a fun puzzle to see how many new words we can make by changing just one letter.
- Being creative and using our imagination can help us come up with lots of new words!
"Let's see what happens when we change the letter 'W' in 'WEDNESDAY' to 'B'. What new word do we get? BEDNESDAY!"
"Can you think of a word that rhymes with 'CAT' if we change the 'C' to 'H'? That's right, it's 'HAT'!"
"Let's draw a picture of Wednesday Addams and create new words around her by changing letters in 'WEDNESDAY'. What word can we make by changing the 'S' to 'T'?"
