- Access to a computer or library for research
- Open mind and willingness to engage with different perspectives
Activities
1. Text Analysis: Choose a piece of literature, a song, or a movie scene that resonates with you. Analyze how the text represents certain ideas or experiences. Consider the language used, the themes portrayed, and the emotions evoked.
2. Values Exploration: Reflect on your own values and attitudes. Write a short essay on how the text you chose either affirms or challenges your beliefs. Discuss any new insights gained from this exercise.
3. Discussion: Have a conversation with a family member or friend about a text they find meaningful. Listen to their perspective and share your own thoughts on how the text reflects different values and attitudes.
Talking Points
- Text Representation: "When we analyze a text, we are looking at how the author or creator has portrayed certain ideas or experiences."
- Values and Attitudes: "Our values are the beliefs that are important to us, while attitudes are our feelings or opinions towards something."
- Affirm or Challenge: "Texts can either confirm what we already believe (affirm) or make us question our beliefs (challenge). It's important to be open to different perspectives."
- Personal Reflection: "Take time to reflect on how a text impacts you personally. Consider why certain themes or messages resonate with you."
- Discussion Skills: "Engaging in conversations about texts can help us see things from different viewpoints. It's okay to have differing opinions as long as we respect each other's perspectives."
