Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts at a seventh-grade level.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Blank paper
  • Calculator (optional)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Addition and Subtraction Practice

Start by solving the following addition and subtraction problems:

    • 27 + 14 = ?
    • 63 - 29 = ?
    • 42 + 18 - 7 = ?

Write down your solutions and check them using a calculator if needed.

  2. Activity 2: Multiplication and Division Practice

Next, solve the following multiplication and division problems:

    • 8 × 5 = ?
    • 72 ÷ 9 = ?
    • (15 + 3) × 2 ÷ 6 = ?

Write down your solutions and check them using a calculator if needed.

  3. Activity 3: Word Problems

Now, let's apply what we've learned to solve some word problems:

    • John has 15 marbles and he gives away 7. How many marbles does he have left?
    • Alice wants to buy a toy that costs $32. She has saved $15 so far. How much more does she need to save?

Write down your solutions and explain your reasoning.

Seventh Grade Talking Points

  • "Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and basic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division."
  • "In this lesson, we will focus on practicing these operations and solving word problems."
  • "Remember, when adding or subtracting numbers, the order in which you perform the operations matters. Start from the left and work your way to the right."
  • "When multiplying or dividing numbers, the order of operations is different. Multiplication and division should be done before addition and subtraction."
  • "Parentheses can be used to group numbers and operations together. The operations within the parentheses should be performed first."
  • "Always double-check your calculations and use a calculator if needed."
  • "Word problems require careful reading and understanding of the situation. Take your time and think about what the problem is asking."
  • "It's important to write down your steps and solutions neatly to avoid making mistakes and to help you organize your work."
