Materials and Prep

  • Journal or notebook
  • Pencils, colored pencils, markers
  • Outdoor space or access to nature
  • Curiosity and creativity

No prior knowledge is needed, just an interest in exploring and documenting nature!

Activities

  1. Go outside and find a quiet spot in nature. Sit down and observe your surroundings. What do you see, hear, smell?

  2. Choose one element of nature that catches your attention (a flower, a bird, a tree). Sketch it in your journal and label its parts.

  3. Write a short description of your chosen element. Include details like color, size, texture, and any interesting facts you know about it.

  4. Create a collage in your journal using leaves, flowers, or other natural materials you find. Use this collage to express your feelings about nature.

Talking Points

  • "Observing nature helps us appreciate the beauty and complexity of the world around us."
  • "Sketching and writing about nature in a journal allows us to capture fleeting moments and memories."
  • "Nature journaling is a personal and creative way to connect with the natural world and express our thoughts and emotions."
This lesson plan is designed to engage the student in hands-on activities that encourage observation, creativity, and reflection in nature. Have fun exploring and documenting your nature journal!
