Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will understand why oil and water do not mix and observe the cool effects of this phenomenon.

Materials and Prep

  • Clear glass or plastic container
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Paper towels for cleanup

No special preparations are needed for this lesson, just make sure to have the materials ready.

Activities

  • Oil and Water Exploration: Fill the container with water and add a few drops of food coloring for fun. Pour oil into the container and observe what happens. Try stirring and see if the oil and water mix.
  • Oil and Water Art: Take another container and repeat the process of adding water and oil. Watch as the oil forms beautiful patterns in the water. You can even try moving the container to see the patterns change.
  • Oil and Water Separation: After observing the oil and water mixture, try leaving it undisturbed for some time. Notice how the oil floats on top of the water and eventually separates. Discuss why this happens.

Talking Points

  • Oil and water don't mix: "Oil and water are like enemies, they just don't want to mix together. It's because they are made up of different things that don't like each other."
  • Why does oil float on water: "Oil is lighter than water, so it floats on top. It's like a boat floating on the sea!"
  • Creating patterns: "When we mix oil and water, we can see cool patterns forming. It's like making our own little colorful world!"
  • Observing changes over time: "If we leave the oil and water alone, we can see them separate. It's like the oil saying, 'I don't want to be with you, water!'"
