Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to read and understand a simple historical story and answer basic comprehension questions about it.
Materials and Prep
- A historical storybook (e.g., "The First Thanksgiving")
- A notebook or paper for writing
- Pencils or crayons
Activities
- Start by introducing the concept of history to the student. Explain that history is about things that happened in the past and that we can learn about them through stories.
- Read the historical storybook together. Encourage the student to listen carefully and ask questions if they don't understand something.
- After reading, ask the student to retell the story in their own words. This will help assess their comprehension.
- Discuss the main characters, setting, and events of the story. Ask the student to draw a picture of their favorite part of the story and write a sentence or two about it.
- Ask the student some basic comprehension questions about the story, such as "Who were the main characters?" or "Where did the story take place?" Encourage them to answer using complete sentences.
- Wrap up the lesson by reviewing what was learned and praising the student for their efforts.
