Materials and Prep

  • Shoebox or small cardboard box
  • Colored paper
  • Scissors and glue
  • Toy animals and plants (optional)
  • Markers or crayons
  • Internet access for research

No prior knowledge required, just bring your creativity!

Activities

  • Research: Use the internet or books to learn about the layers of the rainforest and the animals that live there.
  • Diorama Creation: Cut out green paper for the forest floor, brown paper for tree trunks, and blue paper for a river. Arrange them in the shoebox to create your rainforest scene.
  • Animal Fun: Draw or use toy animals to place in your diorama. Think about where each animal would live in the rainforest.

Talking Points

  • Rainforest Layers: "The rainforest has different layers like a cake. Can you imagine the top layer being sunny and the bottom layer being dark and damp?"
  • Animal Adaptations: "Animals in the rainforest have special features to help them survive. What special features do you think a monkey might have?"
  • Biodiversity: "Biodiversity means many different types of plants and animals living together. It's like a big family reunion in the rainforest!"
  • Conservation: "It's important to protect the rainforest so that animals and plants can continue to thrive. What can we do to help?"
