Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create your own magic potions using simple chemistry principles.
Materials and Prep
- Water
- Food coloring
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Measuring spoons
- Cups or containers
- Stirring utensils
- Protective eyewear (optional)
Make sure you have adult supervision and permission to use these materials.
Activities
-
Create a fizzing potion:
- Fill a cup with water.
- Add a few drops of food coloring to the water.
- Add a tablespoon of baking soda to the cup.
- Slowly pour vinegar into the cup and observe the reaction.
-
Create a color-changing potion:
- Fill two cups with water.
- Add different colors of food coloring to each cup.
- Add a tablespoon of baking soda to one cup and stir.
- Add a tablespoon of vinegar to the other cup and stir.
- Observe and compare the color changes in the two cups.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the properties, composition, and behavior of matter."
- "In our activities today, we are using different substances like baking soda and vinegar, and observing how they react with each other."
- "When baking soda and vinegar mix, they undergo a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide gas. This gas creates the fizzing effect."
- "Food coloring is made up of different molecules that absorb and reflect light, which is why we see different colors."
- "When we mix baking soda with water, it changes the pH level and can cause the color of the food coloring to change."
- "Vinegar is an acid, and when we mix it with the baking soda, it neutralizes the baking soda's basic properties, resulting in a color change."
