Objective
By the end of this lesson, Elisabeth will be able to create paper butterflies and measure how far they can fly using non-standard units.
Materials and Prep
Materials needed: colored paper, scissors, markers, ruler, tape
No prior knowledge required.
Activities
1. Create Paper Butterflies: Show Elisabeth how to fold and cut paper to make butterfly shapes. Let her decorate them with markers.
2. Measure Flight Distance: Have Elisabeth choose a starting point and fly her paper butterfly. Use the ruler to measure how far it flew in terms of Elisabeth's hand spans or footsteps.
3. Experiment with Flight: Encourage Elisabeth to try different folding techniques and designs to see how they affect the flight distance.
Talking Points
- "Let's fold this paper in half to create the butterfly's wings."
- "Now, let's cut along the edges to make the butterfly shape."
- "Use these markers to give your butterfly beautiful colors."
- "Can you show me how many hand spans your butterfly flew?"
- "How many footsteps did your butterfly take to reach the end?"
