Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to build a sandcastle using only sand and water.

Materials and Prep

Materials:

  • Bucket
  • Shovel
  • Water (from a nearby beach or using a water bottle)

Preparation:

  • Find a suitable spot on the beach with compact sand
  • Check the tide schedule to ensure your sandcastle won't be washed away

Activities

1. Find a flat area on the beach and dig a hole with the shovel to collect wet sand.

2. Fill the bucket with wet sand and pack it tightly to create the base of your sandcastle.

3. Slowly add water to the sand to make it more moldable and start building your castle walls.

4. Use the shovel or your hands to shape the towers, walls, and any other features you want for your sandcastle.

5. Decorate your sandcastle with shells, seaweed, or any other beach findings to make it unique.

Talking Points

  • Explain to the student the importance of using wet sand to build a sturdy sandcastle.

"Using wet sand helps the grains stick together, making your sandcastle stronger and less likely to collapse."

  • Show them how to pack the sand tightly in the bucket to create a solid base.

"Pressing the sand firmly in the bucket will give your sandcastle a strong foundation to build upon."

  • Encourage the student to experiment with different shapes and structures for their sandcastle.

"Feel free to get creative and try building different types of towers or walls to make your sandcastle stand out."

  • Discuss the importance of adding water gradually to the sand for better molding.

"Adding water little by little helps the sand stick together without making it too wet and runny."

  • Remind the student to have fun and enjoy the process of building their sandcastle.

"Don't worry about making it perfect, the most important thing is to have fun and be proud of your creation!"
