Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to have fun making watermelon play dough, roll it out, and count out the correct number of seeds using black beans.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed:

  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Cream of tartar
  • Watermelon extract or red food coloring
  • Mini chocolate chips or black beans
  • Green food coloring
  • Mixing bowl
  • Pot
  • Stove

Prep: Prepare the watermelon play dough in advance by mixing the ingredients and cooking them on the stove.

Activities

  • Make watermelon play dough together by mixing the ingredients and cooking them on the stove.
  • Roll out the play dough into a flat circle to resemble a watermelon slice.
  • Use black beans to count out the correct number of seeds and place them on the play dough.
  • Have a pretend picnic with your watermelon play dough slices and count the seeds on each slice.

Talking Points

  • Let's make play dough that looks like a watermelon! It will be red like the inside of a watermelon.
  • We need to roll out the play dough to make it flat like a watermelon slice.
  • Now, let's count out the seeds. Each watermelon slice needs just the right number of seeds.
