Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to confidently evaluate mathematical expressions using different operations.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Calculator (optional)
- Basic understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Activities
- Expression Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of expressions for the student to solve around the house. For example, "2 + 3 x 4 - 5".
- Math Bingo: Create a bingo card with various expressions. Call out the results, and the student has to mark the correct answer on their card.
- Expression Art: Use different colored markers to represent different operations in an expression. For example, red for addition, blue for subtraction, etc.
Talking Points
- Addition and Subtraction: "When you see a plus or minus sign in an expression, you need to perform the operation in order from left to right."
- Multiplication and Division: "Multiplication and division have higher priority than addition and subtraction. Remember to solve them first."
- Using Parentheses: "Parentheses can be used to indicate which operations should be done first. Always solve what's inside the parentheses first."
- Practice Makes Perfect: "The more you practice evaluating expressions, the more confident you will become in handling complex math problems."
