Materials and Prep

  • Bearded dragon enclosure or tank
  • Substrate (e.g., reptile carpet, sand, or paper towels)
  • Heat lamp and UVB light
  • Thermometer and hygrometer
  • Hideouts and climbing structures
  • Water dish and food bowl
  • Bearded dragon food (e.g., crickets, vegetables, and fruits)
  • Water spray bottle
  • Bearded dragon care guide or book

Prior to the lesson, make sure you have a suitable location for the habitat and gather all the necessary materials. Familiarize yourself with the care guide or book to ensure you understand the needs of your bearded dragon.

Activities

  1. Prepare the enclosure:

    • Place the substrate on the bottom of the tank, ensuring it covers the entire surface.
    • Position the heat lamp and UVB light in appropriate locations, providing a warm basking spot and proper UVB exposure.
    • Set up hideouts and climbing structures to create a stimulating environment for your bearded dragon.
    • Place the water dish and food bowl in easily accessible areas.
  2. Monitor the temperature and humidity:

    • Use a thermometer to measure the temperature at different spots within the enclosure, ensuring there is a suitable gradient from warm to cool areas.
    • Use a hygrometer to monitor the humidity levels, aiming for a range of 30-40%.
  3. Provide food and water:

    • Offer a variety of bearded dragon food, including live insects (such as crickets) and fresh vegetables and fruits.
    • Mist the enclosure with a water spray bottle to provide hydration for your bearded dragon.
  4. Research and learn:

    • Refer to the bearded dragon care guide or book to further understand their specific needs, such as feeding schedules, potential health issues, and handling techniques.
    • Take notes and ask any questions you may have.
