Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will have a better understanding of the Earth's early history and how it has changed over time.
Materials and Prep
- Copy of Barron's History of the Earth Chapter 1: The Young Earth
- Notebook and pen
- Access to a computer or tablet for research
No prior knowledge required, just bring your curiosity and enthusiasm!
Activities
- Timeline Creation: Create a timeline of Earth's history starting from its formation. Include major events such as the formation of the atmosphere and the first signs of life.
- Fossil Excavation: Pretend to be a paleontologist and "excavate" fossils from your backyard or a nearby park. Research what these fossils might tell us about the Earth's past.
- Earth's Layers Model: Use playdough or clay to create a model of the Earth's layers (crust, mantle, outer core, inner core). Label each layer and discuss their characteristics.
Talking Points
- Earth's Formation: "Imagine a time when the Earth was just a hot ball of molten rock, slowly cooling down over millions of years."
- First Signs of Life: "Tiny microorganisms were the first life forms on Earth. They were so small, you would need a microscope to see them!"
- Changing Landscapes: "The Earth's surface has changed a lot over time. Mountains formed, oceans shifted, and new continents emerged."
- Dinosaur Era: "During the time of dinosaurs, the Earth looked very different. Huge reptiles roamed the land and sea!"
- Ice Ages: "Can you imagine a time when giant glaciers covered much of the Earth? That's what happened during the Ice Ages!"
