Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic algebraic concepts through physical movement and hands-on activities using Legos and animals.
Materials and Prep
- Legos (various colors and sizes)
- Animal figurines or pictures
- Open space for physical movement
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Warm-up: Animal Actions
Choose an animal figurine or picture and demonstrate its movements. Encourage the student to imitate the movements and make corresponding animal sounds. Repeat with different animals.
-
Lego Patterns
Using Legos, create simple patterns (e.g., red, blue, red, blue) and ask the student to continue the pattern. Gradually increase the complexity of the patterns as the student becomes comfortable.
-
Animal Equations
Select two animal figurines or pictures and place them side by side. Explain that each animal represents a number. Ask the student to count the animals and then add or subtract them to find the solution. Use simple equations such as 2 + 3 = ? or 5 - 2 = ?
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to learn about numbers and patterns using Legos and animals!"
- "Animals move in different ways. Let's pretend to be different animals and make their sounds!"
- "Can you continue the pattern of colors with the Legos? Red, blue, red, blue..."
- "Look at these animal figurines. We can use them to solve equations. What happens when we add or subtract them?"
- "Great job! You are becoming a math expert with Legos and animals!"
