Objective
Audrey will develop a deeper understanding and fluency in mathematics by exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, applying techniques to solve problems, and communicating her thinking clearly.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencils
- Eraser
- Ruler
- Calculator (optional)
No prior knowledge needed, just bring your enthusiasm and curiosity!
Activities
- Math Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of math-related items or shapes around the house for Audrey to find and identify. For example, a square window, a circular plate, or a rectangle book.
- Math Story Problems: Come up with fun story problems involving Audrey's favorite characters or interests. Encourage her to write out the problems and solve them using drawings or numbers.
- Math Bingo: Create a bingo card with math problems instead of numbers. Audrey can solve the problems and mark the answers on her card. The first to get a line wins!
Talking Points
- Understanding Math: "Math is like solving puzzles. We use numbers and shapes to figure out how things work."
- Problem Solving: "When we have a math problem, we can think about different ways to solve it. We can draw pictures, use objects, or write numbers."
- Communicating Ideas: "It's important to explain how we solved a problem so others can understand. We can use words, drawings, or even act it out!"
- Practice Makes Perfect: "The more we practice math, the better we get at it. Don't worry if it's challenging at first, we learn by trying!"
