Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of basic dance techniques and create a short dance routine.
Materials and Prep
- Open space to move around
- Comfortable clothing
- Music player or access to online music
- Notebook and pen for taking notes
Prior knowledge of different dance styles and basic dance terminology is helpful but not required.
Activities
- Warm-up: Start with a 10-minute warm-up routine consisting of stretching exercises and light cardio.
- Introduction to Dance Styles: Discuss different dance styles such as ballet, jazz, contemporary, and hip-hop. Explain the characteristics and techniques associated with each style.
- Technique Practice: Choose one dance style to focus on for the lesson. Teach and practice basic techniques specific to that style, such as pliés and tendus for ballet, isolations and turns for jazz, or floorwork and improvisation for contemporary.
- Choreography: Guide the student in creating a short dance routine incorporating the techniques learned. Encourage creativity and self-expression.
- Performance: Have the student perform their dance routine, either in front of you or record it for self-evaluation.
