Materials and Prep
Materials: Paper, crayons/markers, scissors
Prep: None
Activities
Create a Community Collage: Have the student draw and cut out pictures of different community helpers and places in a community. Then, help them arrange the cutouts on a piece of paper to create a community collage.
Community Helper Dress-Up: Encourage the student to dress up as their favorite community helper using clothes and props they have at home. Let them act out the role and explain what that community helper does.
Community Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of community places (e.g., library, fire station, grocery store) for the student to find around the house or neighborhood. Once found, discuss the importance of each place in the community.
Talking Points
- “A community is a group of people who live and work together in the same area.”
- “Community helpers are people who have jobs that help others in the community, like firefighters, doctors, and teachers.”
- “Each community place serves a different purpose. For example, the library is where we can borrow books and learn new things.”
