Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand how magnets work and how they can create forces.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: Magnets (bar magnets, horseshoe magnets, and fridge magnets), paper clips, small objects like coins or buttons, cardboard, and a bowl of water. No prior knowledge required.

Activities

  • Magnet Exploration: Play with different magnets and observe how they attract or repel certain objects.
  • Float or Sink: Place different objects in the bowl of water and see if the magnets can make them float or sink.
  • Magnetic Maze: Create a maze on the cardboard and use a magnet to navigate through it.

Talking Points

  • What is a Magnet?
"A magnet is a special object that can pull certain things towards it without touching them."
  • How do Magnets Work?
"Magnets have invisible forces that can attract or repel other objects made of metal."
  • Types of Magnets:
"There are different shapes of magnets like bar magnets that look like a stick and horseshoe magnets that look like a 'U'."
  • Exploring with Magnets:
"You can have fun exploring with magnets by seeing what objects they can attract or repel."
  • Creating Forces:
"By using magnets, we can create forces that can make objects move without touching them."
  • Stay Curious:
"Always be curious and ask questions about how magnets work. There is so much more to learn!"
