Materials and Prep

  • A picture book about baking
  • A blank recipe card
  • A pencil or crayon

Activities

  1. Read the picture book about baking together. Pay attention to the words and pictures that show the ingredients and steps in the baking process.

  2. After reading, ask your child to think of their favorite baked treat. Write down the name of the treat on the recipe card.

  3. Together, brainstorm the ingredients needed to make the treat. Write down each ingredient on the recipe card.

  4. Next, discuss the steps involved in making the treat. Encourage your child to use their imagination and describe each step in simple terms. Write down the steps on the recipe card.

  5. Read the completed recipe card together, emphasizing each ingredient and step. Help your child sound out any unfamiliar words.
