Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and use different parts of speech correctly in sentences.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen or pencil
  • Blank paper or notebook

Before starting this lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of sentence structure and the different parts of speech.

Activities

  1. Parts of Speech Sort

Write down the following parts of speech on separate pieces of paper: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, and conjunction. Mix them up and place them face down on the table. Take turns picking a card and placing it in the correct category. Discuss why each word belongs in its respective category.

  2. Mad Libs

Create a silly story together by filling in the blanks with different parts of speech. Start with a simple sentence and take turns adding words to complete the story. Read the story aloud once it's complete and have a good laugh!

  3. Sentence Scramble

Write down several sentences on separate pieces of paper, but mix up the word order in each sentence. Your task is to rearrange the words to form grammatically correct sentences. Discuss the importance of word order and how it affects the meaning of a sentence.

Fourth Grade Talking Points

  • "In English grammar, we have different parts of speech that help us understand how words function in sentences."
  • "Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or ideas. For example, 'dog,' 'book,' and 'happiness' are all nouns."
  • "Verbs are action words that describe what someone or something is doing. For example, 'run,' 'jump,' and 'eat' are all verbs."
  • "Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns. They give more information about the noun. For example, 'red,' 'big,' and 'happy' are all adjectives."
  • "Adverbs are words that describe or modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They tell us how, when, or where something happens. For example, 'quickly,' 'yesterday,' and 'here' are all adverbs."
  • "Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns. They make our sentences flow better and avoid repetition. For example, 'he,' 'she,' and 'it' are all pronouns."
  • "Prepositions are words that show relationships between other words in a sentence. They often indicate location, direction, or time. For example, 'in,' 'on,' and 'at' are all prepositions."
  • "Conjunctions are words that join words, phrases, or clauses together. They help us connect ideas. For example, 'and,' 'but,' and 'or' are all conjunctions."
