Objective

By the end of this lesson, Wesley will gain a foundational understanding of 3D modeling and printing. He will learn how to think creatively to solve problems and design a simple object that can be printed using a 3D printer.

Materials and Prep

  • 3D printer
  • 3D printing filament
  • Stable desk for printing
  • Computer with 3D modeling software installed (like Tinkercad)
  • Internet access for tutorials and inspiration

Before the lesson, ensure the 3D printer is set up and functioning properly. Familiarize yourself with the 3D modeling software and have a few example designs ready for inspiration.

Activities

  • Introduction to 3D Modeling:

Wesley will start by watching a short tutorial on how to use the 3D modeling software. He will learn about basic shapes and how to combine them to create simple objects.

  • Design a Unique Object:

Wesley will brainstorm ideas for a unique object he would like to design. He can think about everyday problems he faces and how a custom object could help solve them. He will then create this object using the software.

  • Prepare for Printing:

Once the design is complete, Wesley will learn how to prepare the file for printing. He will understand how to check the dimensions and make sure the design is suitable for the 3D printer.

  • 3D Printing Process:

Wesley will observe the 3D printing process as his design comes to life. He will learn about the different parts of the printer and how they work together to create the object.

  • Reflection and Problem Solving:

After the object is printed, Wesley will reflect on the design process. He will discuss what worked well, what challenges he faced, and how he might improve his design next time.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think 3D printing can do? It's like magic, but it's really just technology!"
  • "Every great invention starts with a problem. What problem can we solve today?"
  • "In 3D modeling, we can use simple shapes to make complex designs. Let’s start with a cube!"
  • "When we design, we can think about how our object will be used. How will it help someone?"
  • "Remember, it’s okay to make mistakes! Each mistake is a chance to learn something new."
  • "Look at how the printer works! It’s like watching a robot create something from scratch!"
  • "After we print, we can think about how we could make our design even better next time!"
