Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have designed and built a unique Star Wars Lego creation, while also learning about the key elements of storytelling and character development in the Star Wars universe.

Materials and Prep

  • Star Wars Lego sets (or assorted Lego pieces)
  • Pencil and paper for sketching designs
  • Timer (optional, for timed building challenges)
  • Access to Star Wars movies or shows (for inspiration)
  • Space to build and display creations

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the main characters and themes of Star Wars. This will help in discussing the elements of storytelling.

Activities

  • Character Exploration:

Start by choosing a favorite Star Wars character. Research their background and personality traits. Write down a few key points about what makes them special.

  • Design Your Creation:

Sketch out a design for a Lego spaceship or character that represents your chosen Star Wars character. Think about colors, shapes, and any special features it might have.

  • Building Challenge:

Set a timer for 30 minutes and build your Lego creation based on your design. Try to incorporate elements that reflect the character's traits or story.

  • Storytelling Session:

Once your creation is built, create a short story or scenario that involves your character and their adventures. Share it with a family member or friend.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a character memorable? Is it their actions, their appearance, or something else?"

  • "How can you use colors and shapes in your Lego design to express the character's personality?"
  • "What challenges might your character face in a new adventure? How can you represent that in your Lego build?"
  • "Why do you think storytelling is important in movies and shows? What do you enjoy most about the stories in Star Wars?"
  • "How does building with Legos help you understand engineering and design? Can you think of any real-life applications?"
  • "What was your favorite part of the building process? Was it sketching, building, or storytelling?"
  • "How can you make your story even more exciting? What twists or turns could happen?"
  • "What other characters or scenes from Star Wars inspire you? How would you incorporate them into your next Lego project?"
  • "How does working on a project like this help you express your creativity? Can you think of other ways to be creative?"
  • "What did you learn about your character that you didn’t know before? Did it change how you see them?"
  • "How does teamwork play a role in building and creating? Have you ever worked with someone else on a Lego project?"
