Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and use Tier 1 words (everyday words) and Tier 2 words (more descriptive words) in familiar contexts. The student will also have fun while learning new vocabulary through engaging activities.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- A list of Tier 1 and Tier 2 words (you can create this beforehand)
- Space to move around for activities
Before the lesson, prepare a list of 5-10 Tier 1 words (like "cat," "happy," "run") and 5-10 Tier 2 words (like "feline," "joyful," "sprint"). Make sure you have enough space for activities and a comfortable area to sit and draw.
Activities
- Word Matching Game: Create a matching game where the student has to match Tier 1 words with their Tier 2 counterparts. For example, match "happy" with "joyful." This will help them understand how different words can mean similar things.
- Draw and Describe: Ask the student to draw a picture of something they like (like a pet or a favorite place) using Tier 1 words to describe it. Then, encourage them to use Tier 2 words to make their description more interesting.
- Word Treasure Hunt: Hide cards with Tier 1 and Tier 2 words around the house or yard. As they find each card, they can say the word out loud and use it in a sentence. This promotes active learning and physical movement!
Talking Points
- "What do you think a Tier 1 word is? It's a word we use every day, like 'dog' or 'happy'!"
- "Now, can you think of a Tier 2 word? It's a special word that makes our sentences more colorful, like 'joyful' instead of just 'happy'!"
- "When we draw, we can use our words to tell a story! What can you tell me about your picture?"
- "Let's play a game! Can you find a word and tell me what it means? How can we use it in a fun sentence?"
- "Great job! Using different words makes our talking and writing so much more fun! Can you think of a new word to use tomorrow?"
