Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to confidently prepare and bake delicious chocolate chip cookies from scratch, understanding the basic principles of baking and ingredient functions.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups chocolate chips
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper (optional)
  • Oven

Before beginning, ensure the oven is preheated to 350°F (175°C) and that all ingredients are at room temperature for optimal mixing.

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration:

Start by discussing each ingredient's role in the cookie-making process. What does butter do? Why do we need baking soda? This will help the student understand how flavors and textures are created.

  • Mixing and Measuring:

Practice measuring the ingredients accurately and mixing them in the correct order. This is a great opportunity to discuss the importance of precision in baking.

  • Baking Time:

While the cookies are baking, engage in a discussion about baking science. Why does the dough spread? What happens to the sugar? This will deepen understanding of the chemical reactions involved.

  • Taste Test and Feedback:

Once baked, taste the cookies and discuss what worked well and what could be improved. This is a fun way to apply critical thinking and self-assessment.

Talking Points

  • "Baking is both an art and a science. Each ingredient has a specific role that contributes to the final product."
  • "Measuring ingredients accurately can make or break your cookies. Precision is key!"
  • "The creaming method, where you beat butter and sugar together, incorporates air into the dough, leading to a lighter texture."
  • "Baking soda is a leavening agent that helps cookies rise. Without it, your cookies would be flat."
  • "Don’t be afraid to experiment with flavors! You can add nuts, dried fruits, or even spices to make your cookies unique."
  • "The beauty of homemade cookies is that you can adjust the sweetness and chocolate intensity to suit your taste."
  • "Remember, practice makes perfect. The more you bake, the better you’ll get at it!"
