Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of personal financial literacy, including budgeting, saving, and the importance of responsible spending. They will create their own budget plan and learn how to set financial goals.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pen/pencil
  • A calculator (optional)
  • Access to a computer or smartphone for research (optional)
  • Knowledge of basic math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • Understanding of common financial terms (income, expenses, savings, budget)

Activities

  • Personal Budget Creation: The student will create a personal budget for a hypothetical monthly income. They will list potential expenses (like food, entertainment, and savings) and allocate their income accordingly.

  • Financial Goals Worksheet: The student will write down three short-term and three long-term financial goals. They will then discuss the steps needed to achieve these goals.

  • Spending Challenge: The student will choose a week where they will track their spending. They will categorize their expenses and reflect on their spending habits at the end of the week.

  • "Setting financial goals is important because it gives you something to work towards. What do you want to save for?"
  • "Saving money is like planting a seed. The more you save now, the bigger your financial tree will grow in the future!"
  • "Tracking your spending helps you understand your habits. Are you spending more on snacks than you thought?"
  • "Remember, it's okay to treat yourself sometimes, but it’s important to find a balance between spending and saving."
  • "Investing is another way to grow your money. Have you heard the phrase 'Make your money work for you'?"
  • "Learning about money now will help you later in life. It's never too early to start!"
