Objective
By the end of this lesson, the first-grade student will be able to understand the basic concepts of government and citizenship.
Materials and Prep
- Whiteboard or large paper
- Markers or crayons
- Printed pictures of community helpers (e.g., police officer, firefighter, teacher)
- Printed pictures of national symbols (e.g., American flag, Statue of Liberty)
Activities
- Start by discussing the concept of government. Ask the student what they think government means and write down their ideas on the whiteboard or paper.
- Show the printed pictures of community helpers and ask the student to identify them. Explain that these people are part of the government and they help our community stay safe and organized.
- Next, show the printed pictures of national symbols and ask the student if they recognize any of them. Explain that these symbols represent our country and its values.
- Engage the student in a role-playing activity where they pretend to be a community helper. Let them choose a role (e.g., police officer, teacher) and encourage them to explain how they can help their community.
- Wrap up the lesson by summarizing the main points discussed and asking the student to draw a picture of their favorite community helper or national symbol.
