Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to explore and understand basic concepts in English, History, Math, Science, and Social Studies through fun activities related to their interest in YouTube. The student will create a mini YouTube video project that combines all these subjects.
Materials and Prep
- A smartphone or tablet with a camera (for recording video)
- Paper and colored pencils or markers (for planning and drawing)
- A computer or tablet with internet access (for researching and watching YouTube videos)
- Access to a YouTube account (for uploading the video if desired)
- Basic knowledge of how to use the camera and YouTube platform
Activities
-
Story Time and Script Writing: The student will watch a short YouTube video related to one of the subjects (like a fun science experiment). After watching, they will write a short script about what they learned and how they can explain it to their friends.
-
Math Challenge: Create a simple math problem related to the video. For example, if the video showed 5 different experiments, the student can create a problem like, "If each experiment takes 2 minutes, how long will all experiments take?"
-
Science Experiment: The student can choose a simple science experiment from a YouTube video and try it out. They will record the process and explain what they are doing and why it works.
-
History Connection: The student will find a historical figure related to their video topic (like Thomas Edison for inventions) and create a fun fact sheet about that person to share in their video.
-
Social Studies Reflection: Discuss how technology like YouTube has changed the way we learn. The student can create a short segment in their video about why they think YouTube is a great learning tool.
Talking Points
- "What did you learn from the video? Can you tell me in your own words?"
- "How can we use math in real life? Can you think of a math problem from our activities?"
- "What was the science experiment about? Why do you think it works?"
- "Who was your historical figure? What did they do that was important?"
- "Why do you think YouTube is a good place to learn new things? Can you give me an example?"
- "How do you feel about making your own video? What do you want to show your friends?"
- "What was your favorite part of today’s lesson? Why did you like it?"
