Becoming a YouTube Star: Writing Your Character's Story

Materials:

  • Notebook or writing software
  • Pen or pencil
  • Computer or tablet with internet access (optional, for inspiration)
  • Whiteboard or large paper (optional, for brainstorming)

Lesson Activities:

1. Introduction: The World of YouTube (10 mins)

Hey Ella! Today, we're diving into the exciting world of creative writing, but with a modern twist: YouTube fame! Think about some of your favorite YouTubers. What makes them fun to watch? We know YouTubers like Maddox Batson and Nidal Wonder have huge followings. What kind of videos do they make? How do you think someone goes from making videos in their room to having millions of fans?

Let's chat briefly about what makes their content appealing and what kinds of challenges you imagine they might face (like dealing with comments, staying creative, balancing school/life).

2. Meet Your Character: Brainstorming Time! (15 mins)

Now, let's create YOUR YouTube star! Grab your notebook or open a document. Let's brainstorm:

  • Character Name & Age: Who is our star? How old are they (maybe around your age)?
  • Channel Niche: What kind of videos do they make? Gaming? Vlogging daily life? Crazy challenges? Science experiments? Music covers? Comedy skits? A unique skill?
  • The Spark: What makes their channel special or unique? What's their personality like on camera (and off)?
  • The Rise to Fame: How do they get famous? Was it one viral video that exploded overnight? Or did they slowly build their audience? What was the first video that really took off?
  • The Goal: What does your character want to achieve with their YouTube fame? (Hit a subscriber milestone? Inspire others? Just have fun?)
  • The Challenge: What's the main obstacle or conflict they will face in the story? (Rival YouTuber? Creative block? Pressure from fans? A big secret?)

(Optional: Use whiteboard/large paper for visual brainstorming)

3. Story Structure Quick Chat (5 mins)

Remember the basic parts of a story?

  • Beginning: Introduce the character and their ordinary life *before* fame (or right as they are starting).
  • Middle (Rising Action): Things start happening! They post videos, gain viewers, face challenges, and work towards their goal. This is where the fame grows and the main conflict appears.
  • End (Climax/Resolution): The most exciting part where the character faces their biggest challenge, and then we see how things turn out. (We'll focus mostly on the beginning and middle today).

4. Lights, Camera, Action... Write! (25 mins)

Okay, screenwriter! It's time to start writing the story of your YouTube sensation. Focus on the beginning and the rising action. Describe your character, their world, and how they start their YouTube journey. Show, don't just tell!

  • Instead of saying "She was funny," describe a funny moment from one of her videos or her trying to film.
  • Instead of saying "She got famous fast," describe the moment she saw her video views skyrocketing or read exciting comments.
  • Bring in the challenges you brainstormed! How does your character react?

Don't worry about perfection, just get the ideas flowing!

5. Wrap-up & Next Steps (5 mins)

Great job today, Ella! You've created a unique character and started building their world and story. What was the most fun part? What part of the story are you excited to write next?

Optional Homework/Extension: Continue writing your story! Try to reach the main conflict or challenge you brainstormed. You could even think about designing a 'thumbnail' image for your character's most popular video!
