Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to use math skills to solve problems related to Littlest Pet Shop characters, including addition, subtraction, and basic counting. The student will also engage in creative activities that reinforce these concepts while having fun with their favorite toys!

Materials and Prep

  • Littlest Pet Shop toys or figurines
  • Paper and pencil for writing down math problems
  • Markers or crayons for coloring activities
  • Timer (optional, for timed activities)

Before starting the lesson, make sure to gather all the Littlest Pet Shop toys and find a comfortable space for the student to work on math problems and activities. You can also prepare a few simple math problems to solve together!

Activities

  • Pet Shop Addition:

Gather a few Littlest Pet Shop toys and set them up in different groups. Ask the student to count how many pets are in each group and then add them together to find the total number of pets. For example, if there are 3 dogs and 2 cats, how many pets do they have in total?

  • Subtraction Adventure:

Using the same toys, create a scenario where some pets go on an adventure. For instance, if there are 5 pets and 2 go on an adventure, ask the student to figure out how many pets are left at home. This helps practice subtraction in a fun context!

  • Pet Shop Store:

Set up a pretend Pet Shop using the Littlest Pet Shop toys. Assign a price to each pet (like 1 cookie or 2 candies) and give the student play money (you can draw it on paper). Have them practice buying and selling pets, using addition and subtraction to keep track of their money!

  • Colorful Counting:

Have the student draw their favorite Littlest Pet Shop character on paper and then color it. While they color, ask them to count how many colors they are using and how many times they use each color. This reinforces counting while being creative!

Talking Points

  • "How many pets do we have here? Let's count them together!"
  • "If 3 pets are here and 2 more come, how many do we have now?"
  • "If 5 pets were at home and 2 went out, how many are left? Let's find out!"
  • "Great job counting the colors! How many colors did you use for your pet?"
  • "In our Pet Shop, if you buy a pet for 1 cookie, how many cookies do you have left?"
  • "What if we want to buy 2 pets? How many cookies do we need? Let’s add them up!"
  • "Math is like a fun adventure with our pets, isn’t it? Let’s keep exploring!"
