Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to successfully bake a simple cake from scratch, understand basic baking terminology, and apply essential baking techniques. The student will also learn how to customize a basic recipe to create their own unique cake flavor.

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk or electric mixer
  • Spatula
  • Baking pan (9-inch round or square)
  • Oven

Before starting, ensure that all ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration: Begin by discussing each ingredient's role in baking. For example, "What do you think flour does in our cake?" This will help the student understand the science behind baking.
  • Measuring Challenge: Have the student measure out each ingredient accurately. You can turn it into a game by timing them or asking them to explain how they measured each item. This builds math skills and confidence in the kitchen.
  • Mixing and Baking: Guide the student through the mixing process. Encourage them to describe the texture and appearance of the batter. Ask questions like, "How does the batter change as we mix it?" This fosters observation skills.
  • Decorating Fun: Once the cake is baked and cooled, let the student decorate it with frosting or toppings. Encourage creativity by asking, "What theme do you want for your cake?" This allows for personal expression.
  • Taste Test: Finally, enjoy the cake together! Discuss the flavors and textures. Ask, "What would you change next time to make it even better?" This promotes critical thinking and self-reflection.
