Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of the Roman Empire, including its geography, key figures, daily life, and its lasting impact on modern society. The student will also engage in creative activities that reinforce their learning.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • A large piece of cardboard or poster board
  • Access to a computer or tablet (optional for research)
  • Printed map of the Roman Empire (optional, can be drawn)
  • List of key figures in Roman history (e.g., Julius Caesar, Augustus)
  • Simple recipes for Roman-style food (optional)

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the basic timeline and key events of the Roman Empire, as well as interesting facts about daily life in ancient Rome.

Activities

  • Create a Roman Empire Map:

    The student will draw a map of the Roman Empire, labeling important cities, territories, and geographical features. This helps them visualize the vastness of the empire.

  • Role-Playing Historical Figures:

    The student will choose a key figure from Roman history and create a short monologue or skit about their life and contributions. This encourages creativity and helps them learn through role-play.

  • Roman Feast:

    Prepare a simple dish inspired by Roman cuisine. The student can help with the cooking and learn about the types of food that were popular in ancient Rome.

  • Build a Roman Structure:

    Using cardboard and other materials, the student will create a model of a famous Roman structure, like the Colosseum or a Roman villa. This activity combines art and history.
