Objective
By the end of this lesson, Jacob will explore the changes in nature as summer transitions to fall. He will observe and document his findings using a magnifying glass, ruler, and journal, enhancing his understanding of the natural world around him.
Materials and Prep
- Magnifying glass
- Ruler
- Blank journals
- Dry erase boards
Before starting the lesson, ensure that Jacob is familiar with how to use the magnifying glass and ruler. Prepare a nature walk route that includes areas with visible signs of the changing season, such as trees, leaves, and flowers.
Activities
-
Nature Walk:
Take Jacob on a nature walk to observe the changes in plants and trees. Encourage him to use the magnifying glass to look closely at leaves, flowers, and insects. He can note the colors and shapes he sees in his journal.
-
Leaf Rubbing:
Collect a few different leaves during the walk. Back at home, place the leaves under a blank sheet of paper and use a crayon to rub over the top. This will create a beautiful print of the leaf, which he can color and label.
-
Measuring Nature:
Using the ruler, measure the length and width of different leaves or sticks found during the walk. Jacob can record these measurements in his journal, comparing the sizes of summer and fall leaves.
-
Drawing and Writing:
On the dry erase board, have Jacob draw his favorite thing he saw during the nature walk. Afterward, he can write a few sentences about it in his journal, describing what he saw and how it made him feel.
Talking Points
- "What colors do you see in the leaves? Are they different from summer?"

- "How do you think the plants feel when the seasons change?"
- "What did you like drawing the most? Why?"
- "Can you think of any animals that might be getting ready for winter?"
