Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to analyze the game Monopoly through the lens of English language skills, including vocabulary development, creative writing, and critical thinking. They will create their own game scenario and write a short story based on their Monopoly experience.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or loose-leaf paper
  • Pencil or pen
  • Access to a Monopoly game (optional for reference)
  • Basic understanding of Monopoly rules and gameplay

Activities

  • Vocabulary Building:

Start by identifying key terms used in Monopoly such as "property," "mortgage," "bankruptcy," and "trade." Create flashcards for these terms and write definitions and examples of how they are used in the game.

  • Character Creation:

Have the student create their own Monopoly character. They should write a brief description of their character, including their name, personality traits, and their goal in the game. This can help enhance their creative writing skills.

  • Short Story Writing:

Using the character they created, the student will write a short story that revolves around a Monopoly game. Encourage them to include elements of conflict, resolution, and character development.

  • Game Review:

If available, play a short round of Monopoly. After playing, discuss the strategies used and how language plays a role in negotiating trades and making deals.
