Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will learn fun facts about Pennsylvania, including its capital, location, state bird, state flower, flag, and national parks. They will also create a Pennsylvania clay ornament and plan a three-day trip itinerary to explore Pennsylvania's attractions.
Materials and Prep

- Printed images of the state bird (Eastern Bluebird), state flower (Mountain Laurel), and state flag
- Notebook for trip itinerary
- Junior Ranger booklet (can be printed from the National Park Service website)
Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with Pennsylvania’s geography and attractions to guide the student effectively.
Activities
- Clay Ornament Creation: The student will use modeling clay to create ornaments representing Pennsylvania's state bird and flower. This will be a fun way to learn about their significance.
- Map Exploration: Using a map of Pennsylvania, the student will locate the state capital (Harrisburg) and identify its region. Discuss what makes this area special.
- Junior Ranger Badge Activity: The student will complete activities in the Junior Ranger booklet related to Pennsylvania's national parks. This will encourage exploration and learning about nature.
- Trip Itinerary Planning: Together, plan a three-day trip itinerary that includes visits to key sites in Pennsylvania, like state parks and historical landmarks.
