Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of nutrition, the importance of a balanced diet, and how different food groups contribute to overall health. The student will also learn how to create a simple meal plan that incorporates healthy choices.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for note-taking
  • Access to the internet for research (if available)
  • Cooking utensils (if planning to prepare a meal)
  • Ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g., fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins)

Before the lesson, ensure that the kitchen is clean and that all necessary ingredients are available if cooking is part of the activities.

Activities

  • Nutrition Scavenger Hunt:

Create a list of different food items and their corresponding food groups. The student will search for these items in the kitchen or pantry and categorize them into fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy.

  • Meal Planning Challenge:

The student will design a one-day meal plan that includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. They should aim for a balance of all food groups and consider portion sizes.

  • Cooking Session:

Using the meal plan created, the student will prepare one of the meals. This hands-on activity will reinforce the concepts learned about nutrition and the importance of cooking healthy meals.
