Objective
By the end of this lesson, Michael will have a basic understanding of the Civil War, including who was involved, why it happened, and some fun facts about the time period.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- Small toy soldiers or figures (if available)
- A comfortable space to sit and learn
Before the lesson, it’s helpful to know that the Civil War was a conflict in the United States about 160 years ago. It was between the Northern states and the Southern states over important issues like freedom and rights.
Activities
-
Draw a Battle Scene:
Michael can use paper and crayons to draw a picture of a battle scene from the Civil War. Encourage him to think about what the soldiers looked like and what they might have been doing.
-
Toy Soldier Play:
If Michael has toy soldiers or figures, he can create a mini battlefield. He can set them up in different ways to represent the North and South and act out a little story about them.
-
Story Time:
Read a simple story about the Civil War together. You can create a fun narrative about a young soldier or a family living during that time. Use simple language and ask questions to keep Michael engaged.
-
Sing a Civil War Song:
Find a simple Civil War song or create a fun tune. Michael can sing along, and you can dance or march together to make it lively!
