The student will also gain confidence in their baking skills and enjoy a tasty treat at the end!

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of butter (softened)
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of chocolate chips (optional)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven
  • Parchment paper (optional)

Before starting, make sure the oven is preheated to 350°F (175°C). Also, wash your hands and gather all the materials on a clean surface to work on.

Activities

  • Measuring Ingredients: Start by measuring out all the ingredients using the measuring cups and spoons. This is a great way to practice math skills and learn about different measurements!

  • Mixing the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the sugar and softened butter. Then, add in the egg and vanilla extract. Mix everything together until it's smooth and creamy. This is where the magic begins!

  • Adding Dry Ingredients: Slowly add the flour and baking soda to the wet mixture. Stir until everything is well combined. If you want chocolate chip cookies, this is the time to fold in the chocolate chips!

  • Shaping the Cookies: Use a spoon to scoop out the dough and place it on the baking sheet. You can make them as big or small as you like. Remember to leave some space between each cookie!

  • Baking Time: Carefully place the baking sheet in the preheated oven. Set a timer for about 10-12 minutes. While you wait, you can clean up your workspace and get excited about the yummy cookies coming soon!

  • Taste Testing: Once the cookies are out of the oven and cooled for a few minutes, it’s time to taste your creation! Share with family or friends and enjoy the delicious cookies together!

  • "Why do we need to wait for the cookies to cool? If we eat them too hot, they might fall apart!"
  • "How can we make our cookies even more fun? We can add sprinkles or nuts next time!"
  • "What did you learn today about baking? Baking is fun, and we get to eat our yummy treats!"
