Objective

By the end of this lesson, Luke will explore different subjects through the theme of building. He will learn basic concepts in English, Math, Physical Education, Science, and Social Studies, all while having fun with activities that spark his interest in building!

Materials and Prep

  • Blocks or building materials (anything safe to stack or build with)
  • Pencil and paper for drawing
  • A timer or stopwatch (optional for physical activities)
  • Space to build and move around

Before the lesson, make sure the building materials are safe and accessible. Prepare a space where Luke can move freely and build without any interruptions.

Activities

  • Building Vocabulary

Start by introducing building-related words like "block," "tower," "strong," and "design." Have Luke repeat the words and use them in sentences. For example, "I built a tall tower!"

  • Math with Blocks

Use blocks to teach basic counting and addition. Ask Luke to count how many blocks he has and then add a few more. For example, "If you have 3 blocks and I give you 2 more, how many do you have now?"

  • Building Challenge

Set a timer and challenge Luke to build the tallest tower he can in 5 minutes. After the time is up, measure the height together using a ruler or by comparing it to something like his toy car.

  • Science of Building

Discuss how buildings are strong and what makes them stand up. Ask Luke why he thinks some towers fall and others stay up. Encourage him to experiment with different structures using the blocks.

  • Social Studies: Building Community

Talk about different buildings in a community, like houses, schools, and stores. Ask Luke to draw a picture of his favorite building and explain why he likes it.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a tower strong? Is it how many blocks you use?"
  • "Can you count how many blocks you have? Let's add some more together!"
  • "Look at your tower! How tall do you think it is? Let's measure it!"
  • "Why do you think some buildings fall down? What can we do to make them stronger?"
  • "What buildings do you see in our neighborhood? Can you draw one for me?"
